HREB

HREB LogoThe provincial Health Research Ethics Board (HREB) is established through legislation (the Health Research Ethics Authority Act) by the Health Research Ethics Authority (HREA).

The mandate of the HREB is to review health research involving human subjects that is being conducted in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The HREB has three subcommittees:

  • HREB-Clinical Trial Subcommittee (HREB-CT) – responsible for reviewing clinical trials.
  • HREB-Genetics/Genomics Subcommittee (HREB-GG) – responsible for reviewing genetics research.
  • HREB-Non-Clinical Trial Subcommittee (HREB-NCT) – responsible for reviewing all health research other than clinical trials and genetic research.

The HREA is also able to approve other research ethics bodies to review health research. Currently ICEHR – the Interdisciplinary Committee on Ethics in Human Research (an REB internal to Memorial) is an approved REB to review health research.
